Winter months can be unpredictable when it comes to weather. In Texas, we have seen firsthand how we can go from the “typical” winter weather for the state to a sudden harsh, extreme storm unlike ever seen in the state before. It is important to know how to navigate the roads in the winter months and how to handle different conditions that may arise suddenly. Here are our top tips to staying safe all winter long.

Get Your Car’s Maintenance Done ASAP

While we are technically in winer already, it is never too late to prepare accordingly. We suggest that you get a tune up and have your vehicle’s overall condition looked at before winter weather really kicks in. This means you will want to have your vehicle’s lights checked, battery checked, tires checked, engine fluids (such as antifreeze and windshield washer fluid), and have your ignition system looked at. Additionally, you will want to look at your thermostat, exhaust system, heater, brakes, defroster, and oil level. If anything requires a repair or a replacement, do it as soon as possible in order to drive carefully and safely in winter.

Plan Ahead

If you have any driving ahead of you that is different than your usual neighborhood drives, it is important that you plan your route ahead of time, while looking into things such as the weather. Additionally, plan your drive accordingly in order to allow time to possibly drive slower than usual. Roads may be slick due to rain or snow, which requires slower driving to stay protected.

Have an Emergency Kit With You

An emergency kit is very important in order to stay safe in case any sort of emergency arises. Beneficial things to carry with you in a car emergency kit include, but are not limited to, a flashlight, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, a toolkit, a rope, a windshield scraper, and a brush. Additionally, it is a good idea to have non-perishable foods with you as well as some water.

Be Extra Diligent When on Elevated Roadways

Whenever you drive across a bridge or over an overpass, you face additional driving risks. These are expedited in winter due to the additional driving risks the weather poses. Things such as bridges and overpasses are often the first to freeze when cold weather hits. When you find yourself on any sort of elevated roadway, exercise extra caution when you are behind the wheel.
