With recent political climates constantly changing at the same time as the economy constantly ebbs and flows, mass exodus from states has become a commonplace practice. This means that many states are seeing large populations emigrating while others are seeing large populations immigrating. One such state that is surprisingly seeing a large population leaving the state is Texas. Many people are unhappy with the literal climate and political climate there as well as the price of just about anything.
Some Texans took to social media and forum posts to share their thoughts on leaving the state. One anonymous post on Reddit says “Lifelong Texan here. I am definitely preparing an escape plan. From the heat to the stripping away of human rights, I’m just done.” It seems that this person is actually in the majority. Many others shared their similar thoughts and feelings on this forum page, discussing the states in which many are planning to go to instead. Where people plan to go does seem to vary, as it depends on the nature of the person’s departure.
It seems like both sides of the political coin are fed up and leaving.
There are left-leaning people in the state who plan to leave to go to a more progressive state, setting their sights on California, Colorado, or a New England state. Those who are more right-leaning are seeking to move to areas like Tennessee and a midwestern state.
The interesting phenomenon here is that, in recent years, Texas was a state in which many were moving in from out of state. Texas has been known for its relatively lower cost with regard to the real estate market, which has been an appealing sight for many. However, we have now reached a point in which other factors are driving prior residents out of state, which has started to create an interesting new state. It is almost creating an entirely new population within the state of Texas.
Between 2021 and 2022, nearly half a million people left Texas.
Because of the draw the state previously had, the cost of things is starting to rise. Property taxes are higher, there was a 30% increase from 2019 to 2020 in home costs, and overall prices are just rising. This has created another push for prior residents. Their once home as they knew it started to drastically change because of the large populations of out-of-staters coming in.
